Virtualization

Almost any company, regardless of its size, can benefit from virtualization.

Applicable to both IT consolidation and expansion, virtualization solutions help your organization pool and share IT resources, thus lowering your costs by increasing utilization of your existing physical assets: servers, storage, network components and software licensing! Virtualization can also deliver increasing agility, enabling your IT organization to rapidly respond to changes in the business’ requirements. Comport delivers solutions employing several virtualization technologies.

Server virtualization software:

Server virtualization allows you to consolidate servers and host them on virtual machines running on one physical server, saving rack space and costs for hardware, power, and support. It also improves manageability and increases hardware resource utilization.

If your company has many underutilized servers running Microsoft Windows, Linux, or other operating systems, server virtualization can provide big returns. For example, your network has four Windows servers and two Linux servers, and each runs on a dedicated, but underutilized, server. With virtualization software, such as HP’s VMware ESX Server, you can consolidate those six servers into a single, more powerful server. Each application can be implemented on a virtual machine and share the actual physical hardware. Each virtual machine still runs and operates independently, as before, but safely shares the hardware resources of the single, more powerful server.

By utilizing the HP-UX operating environment and HP Integrity Servers, the same advantages can be derived through hardware and software partitioning and running independent multi-OS virtual systems in each partition. The HP Virtual Server Environment (VSE) reduces cost and eliminates downtime due to failures or required maintenance.

Please refer to the Products section of our website for more information on server and operating environment technologies.

Storage virtualization:

Comport can help you implement a storage virtualization solution that decreases the stress of heterogeneous data management by minimizing the complexity and reducing the total cost of storage ownership. For example, the advanced virtualization technology in the HP Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) storage subsystem simplifies the management of virtual volumes, dynamically reallocating capacity, pooling heterogeneous storage requirements into a single reservoir that results in increased capacity utilization.

The EVA also enables local and remote multi-platform data replication for data distribution, data mining, backup, restore, and data validation testing. The EVA is designed for organizations that demand the most from their storage; high performance, no single point of failure and the easiest management environment in the industry, are what most clients cite as its greatest attributes.

In the Microsoft Windows environment, HP OpenView Virtual Replicator simplifies centralized storage management and increases the utilization of your existing storage resources. Virtual Replicator installs on your Windows server and its advanced functionality creates a centralized storage pool from the physical devices it can see and allows you to create virtual disks. Virtual Replicator provides the ability to take snapshots of these virtual disk for instant recovery and other uses. For example, VR can be used to provide virtual storage management for MS Exchange or SQL Server.

Virtualization benefits large companies but is even more useful for smaller companies. Companies with small IT departments and limited budgets can simplify server and storage management and reap huge savings in time and money.
